Some Traditional Duties of the Mother of the Bride

mother of the brideFrom the moment that she hears that her daughter is getting married, a mom has so many emotions, so many ideas and yes, so many opinions! But while in the past mothers played a major role in wedding planning, more contemporary brides (and grooms) are taking on more and more of the details. So, Mom, it is up to you to sit your daughter down and let her know that you will be her chief supporter, head cheerleader, and shoulder to cry on – but don’t try to take over the preparations. There are many ways that Moms still can step in and take some of the stress off the couple, and feel involved all the way through to the wedding day.

GoTo Coordinator – There are so many phone calls and visits to make – to venues, to caterers, to entertainers and photographers, not to mention to Flora D’Amore. Mom is the perfect person to narrow down choices and to give the couple a concise list of options. After choices are made, Mom can take phone calls, answer questions and set appointments for the bride. TIP: Online calendars are great tools that will allow mom and daughter to stay in touch, and keep the information flowing.

mother of the brideKeeper of the Tradition – “Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue”. With the exception of the “new” part of the traditional rhyme, the items come from family traditions and heirlooms. Mom is the best person to search out her family tradition and make suggestions to the bride for meaningful objects that would be appropriate. TIP: To truly welcome the groom’s family, ask them to contribute one of the items.

Say Yes to the Dress (Shopping): The two most cherished moments between mother and daughter in this process are when the bride-to-be walks out of the dressing room in “the dress”; and when Mom helps her to put on that dress for her walk down the aisle. Traditionally, Mom is involved in the choice of the wedding gown and knows better than anyone what is perfect. TIP: If Mom doesn’t live in the Everett / Lynwood / Seattle area, involve her in this important decision with a video chat application.
